With the new bridge fully open, the old Pattullo Bridge is now permanently closed to vehicles. Demolition of the 1937 bridge is expected to begin later this month and could take up to two years.

The new bridge cost $1.6 billion and replaces the aging Pattullo Bridge. While the project faced delays and debate over its size and name, the province says it will improve safety and traffic flow across the Fraser River.

City Updates

Final Walks on Pattullo Bridge Before Demolition

Crowds gathered this weekend to walk and bike across the 89-year-old Pattullo Bridge one last time. The bridge is now permanently closed to vehicles after the new Stal̕əw̓asəm Bridge fully opened to traffic.

Pedestrians and cyclists can still use the Pattullo sidewalk until Tuesday morning (Feb. 17), according to TransLink. After that, crews will begin taking down the historic bridge — a process expected to take about two years.

The Pattullo first opened in 1937 and has connected Surrey and New Westminster for nearly nine decades. Many residents stopped to take photos and say goodbye before it closes for good.

The Pattullo has been a key crossing over the Fraser River for generations. Its closure marks the end of an era and the start of a new chapter with the modern replacement bridge.

🔑 Key Details:
• Pattullo Bridge now closed to vehicles
• Pedestrian access ends Feb. 17
• Demolition expected to take about two years
