Human Rights Complaint Against Surrey Dismissed by Tribunal

A complaint against the City of Surrey has been dismissed by the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal. The case involved claims of workplace discrimination related to maternity leave.

The employee said the City treated her unfairly by reducing her paid vacation while she was on maternity and parental leave. She believed this was discrimination based on sex.

The City said its policy calculates vacation time based on hours worked in a year. Since the employee was on leave, her vacation time was adjusted based on that policy.

The tribunal said the employee’s concerns were understandable. However, it decided the City’s policy was likely justified and that the complaint would not succeed at a hearing.
