Free Repair Café Helps Surrey Residents Fix, Reuse, and Reduce Waste

A family waits for repairs to a young member’s toy car, during a previous Repair Café at Alex House in South Surrey.
If you have something broken at home, the South Surrey–White Rock Repair Café is giving it a second chance. The next Repair Café runs Sunday, Feb. 8, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Alex House in Crescent Beach. Volunteers will help fix clothing, small appliances, bikes, toys, and household items — all for free.
The goal is to reduce waste and help people reuse what they already own. Instead of throwing items away, residents can learn how things are repaired and get tips on buying products that last longer. Large appliances, vehicles, and gas-powered items are not accepted, but most small items are welcome.
Events like this help cut down on landfill waste and support a more sustainable community. Each repaired item can prevent up to 24 kilograms of CO₂ emissions, making a real environmental impact while saving people money.

Border Incident Near Peace Arch Leads to U.S. Charges

A Canadian woman is facing charges of assault and improper entry following a Dec. 30, 2025 incident at Peace Arch Park.
A Canadian woman is facing charges in the United States after an incident at Peace Arch Park near the Surrey–Washington border. Court records say the woman was denied entry at the official border crossing on Dec. 30 after she declared having a marijuana vape pen. Later that evening, she went to Peace Arch Park and crossed into the U.S. on foot despite warning signs and repeated instructions from border officers.
According to court documents, officers tried to stop her and guide her back to the official crossing. The situation escalated, and agents arrested her for unlawful entry. During the arrest, one officer was injured after being kicked in the face, according to an affidavit reviewed by a judge. Video footage is said to support the officer’s account.
The woman told investigators she was trying to meet her fiancé and retrieve a dog at the park and said she was scared during the arrest. A judge has now found there is enough evidence for the case to move forward. She has been released from criminal custody but is being held at a U.S. immigration detention centre while the case continues.

Outside the new École Snokomish Elementary in Surrey on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026, at 148 Street and 58B Avenue.
Surrey’s newest school has officially opened its doors in the Sullivan area. École Snokomish Elementary welcomed students this week, offering 27 classrooms across three storeys. The school can hold up to 655 students from Kindergarten to Grade 7 and already has about 420 enrolled.
This new school helps reduce crowding at nearby elementary schools and brings a French Immersion program to the area. Police also began enforcing the new school zone on 148 Street to keep students safe during busy drop-off and pick-up times.
Snokomish Elementary was designed with Indigenous history and learning in mind, in partnership with the Semiahmoo First Nation. Surrey Women Build Real-Life Friendships Through Social Soirée

Lesha Singh (Left) and Inayat Lakhani (Right) are co-founders of Social Soirée, a new social event group encouraging connections and friendships through girlhood.
Two Surrey women are helping young women make real friendships — offline. Inayat Lakhani and Lesha Singh started Social Soirée after realizing how hard it can be to connect in person. What began as a simple idea to watch a TV show together quickly turned into sold-out events and a growing community.
Their first screening event filled up so fast they had to add another showing. Women came from across B.C. — and even out of province — just to be part of it. Guests didn’t just come for the event; many left with new friends and kept meeting up afterward. That’s when Lakhani and Singh realized they had created something special.
Social Soirée now hosts fun, low-pressure events like watch parties and themed hangouts, including a Christmas PJ party in December. The focus is on being welcoming, affordable, and comfortable for everyone — even people who are shy or introverted.

Free Tech Program Lets Surrey Teens Explore Coding & Robotics

UBC Geering Up: Teen Techies, hosted by the university’s engineering outreach team, offers a free hands-on learning experience for local teens.
A free hands-on tech program is coming to Surrey Library’s Fleetwood branch, giving local teens a chance to learn about coding, robotics, and engineering in a fun, beginner-friendly way. The program, called UBC Geering Up: Teen Techies, is designed for students in Grades 8–10 and runs over four Saturdays from Jan. 17 to Feb. 7.
During the sessions, teens will work with small computers called microcontrollers — like Arduinos and microbots — to learn how coding makes robots and devices work. No experience is needed. The goal is to spark interest in science and engineering and show students that technology careers can start with simple, hands-on learning.
