Surrey to Host World Cup Fan Zones in 2026

Team Canada soccer players in a photo posted to canadasoccer.com.
Surrey will host two official Soccer Fan Zones during the 2026 FIFA World Cup next summer. The outdoor plaza at Surrey Civic Plaza and the indoor Cloverdale Agriplex will show live games and host special events.
Fans can expect big video screens, live music, food trucks, and soccer-themed activities. The Civic Plaza site will run for 34 days starting June 11, while Cloverdale will host 14 days starting July 1.
City officials say the goal is to bring the excitement of the World Cup to local families and soccer fans who may not travel to Vancouver for games.
These Fan Zones will create free, family-friendly places to watch World Cup matches and celebrate together right here in Surrey.
🔑 Key Details:
• Two Fan Zones at Civic Plaza and Cloverdale Agriplex
• Events run June and July 2026
• Live games, music, food trucks, and activities planned
Surrey Proposes 2.6% Property Tax Increase

Surrey city council is set to vote on a proposed 2.6% property tax increase at its March 9 meeting. A public hearing will take place at City Hall before the vote.
If approved, the increase would cost the average single-family homeowner about $75 more per year. City officials say the extra money would help cover rising costs and support public safety, including police and fire services.
The proposed budget also includes funding for major projects like road upgrades and a new 10,000-seat arena downtown. City leaders say the goal is to keep taxes lower than other Metro Vancouver cities while still investing in growth.
🔑 Key Details:
• 2.6% property tax increase proposed
• About $75 more per average home
• Public hearing March 9 at City Hall

City Updates
Surrey Approves 10,500+ New Homes in Two Years

Surrey has approved 10,508 new homes in the first two years of its Housing Action Plan. That’s more than 80% of the city’s three-year target under the federal Housing Accelerator Fund.
City staff say Surrey added 4,280 homes in 2025 alone and cut permit approval times by 75%. The city received $100.7 million from the federal government in 2023 to help speed up housing projects.
Surrey has also invested millions in housing and bought land for future affordable homes. The city must meet its housing goals by December 2026 to receive the final funding payment.
Why this matters for Surrey residents: more housing approvals can help address supply and affordability as Surrey continues to grow.
🔑 Key Details:
• 10,508 homes approved in two years
• 80% of three-year housing target reached
• Final federal funding depends on meeting 2026 goal

Community Digest
Work Underway to Remove Invasive Plants at Serpentine Fen

A quiet project is happening beneath the water at the Serpentine Wildlife Management Area. While ducks float above, workers are using special black tarps to remove an invasive plant called yellow flag iris.
The work is being led by Ducks Unlimited Canada. The plant is considered a harmful weed in B.C. because it spreads quickly and can damage wetlands and wildlife habitats.
Instead of digging up each plant by hand, crews are placing large rubber sheets over cut plants to block sunlight and kill the roots over time. The goal is to remove the invasive species and later replant the area with native plants.
🔑 Key Details:
• Invasive yellow flag iris being removed
• Ducks Unlimited using tarps to block plant growth
• Long-term plan includes replanting native species
