Nathan Rourke Joins Flag Football Game in South Surrey

Fans in Surrey got a surprise this weekend as Nathan Rourke took the field at South Surrey Athletic Park. The B.C. Lions quarterback played in a local flag football game on March 29.
Rourke joined a team in the BC Adult Flag Football League, which has been growing quickly over the past few years. He says he wants to learn the game and hopes to play for Canada in flag football at the 2028 Olympics.
The league has expanded from just a few teams to over 50 teams and 700 players. Games are held regularly, and more fields may be needed as interest continues to grow.
Organizers say the league is more than just for fun. It is also a pathway for athletes who want to compete at a high level, including representing Canada in future international events.

City Updates
City Centre Land Listed for $18M as Development Grows

The assembled sites on 133A Street and 103A Avenue are also located a short distance from Surrey Memorial Hospital.
A group of properties in Surrey City Centre is up for sale as the area continues to grow. Six lots along 103A Avenue and 133A Street are being sold through a court-ordered process for $18 million.
The site is about 50,000 square feet and is currently occupied by older homes. However, it is being marketed as land for future development in a fast-growing part of the city.
The location is close to Surrey City Centre Station, Simon Fraser University Surrey, and Kwantlen Polytechnic University. This makes it attractive for developers looking to build in a busy, transit-friendly area.
Nearby, the city is also reviewing a proposal for several high-rise towers near King George Boulevard. That project has not yet been approved and is being revised to better fit city plans.
🔑 Key Details:
• Six lots in Surrey City Centre are listed for $18 million
• The site is about 50,000 sq. ft. near transit and universities
• A separate high-rise project nearby is still under review

RCMP Says Goodbye to Cloverdale After 75 Years

Members of the RCMP pause for a photo 75 years ago in May, 1951, when the RCMP first took over policing in the Surrey community of Cloverdale.
For 75 years, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police is ending its time policing Cloverdale. Officers are wrapping up operations as the city continues its transition to a new police service.
In a letter to residents, RCMP leaders thanked the community for its support over the years. They said it has been an honour to serve Cloverdale and be part of the community.
The RCMP first began policing Cloverdale in 1951, with a small team working out of Surrey City Hall. Over time, officers became a familiar presence at local events like the Cloverdale Rodeo and built strong ties with residents.
It marks a major shift in local policing. A new era is beginning, but many are reflecting on the long history the RCMP had in the community.
🔑 Key Details:
• RCMP is ending policing in Cloverdale after 75 years
• Service in the area began in 1951 with a small team
• Officers thanked residents for decades of support
Former Surrey Public Market Site Listed for Major New Development

The project that received preliminary approval from city council would include 282 condos and over 41,000-square-feet of commercial space.
A well-known empty lot in Surrey is now up for sale. The site is at 6396 King George Blvd., where the old Surrey Public Market building once stood. For years, that building sat empty and was often called one of the city’s ugliest spots.
The building was finally torn down in 2017, and part of the land has already been redeveloped nearby. Now, the remaining 2.17-acre site is being sold, with a value of over $10 million.
There are already plans for what could be built there. Surrey council has given early approval for a six-storey building with 282 condos and shops on the ground floor. Final approval is still needed before construction can begin.
🔑 Key Details:
• Vacant site at 6396 King George Blvd. is now for sale
• Land is valued at over $10.3 million with no listed asking price
• Proposed plan includes 282 condos and ground-floor retail (pending final approval)
