Big Towers Coming to Downtown Surrey?

Two huge building projects could soon change Surrey’s skyline. One plan is for two tall towers at 108 Avenue and King George Boulevard. If approved, they’ll have 879 homes, plus stores and offices, ready by 2030.
Another plan would add four towers near University Drive, bringing 1,800 more homes. Both projects will be talked about at a public hearing on Oct. 20 at City Hall.
Why it matters: These towers mean more homes and jobs in Surrey’s growing downtown, but also big changes to the community’s look and feel.
Key Details:
Two towers at 108 Ave & King George: 48 & 52 storeys with 879 homes.
Four towers near University Dr.: 1,800 homes in 40–44 storey towers.
Public hearing Oct. 20, 7 p.m. at Surrey City Hall.

Surrey Tackles Big Sewer Problem

Image surrey.ca
Surrey is starting a major project to fix problems in the city’s sewer system. Rainwater is leaking into the pipes, which makes the system overflow during the wet season—sometimes tripling the normal flow. This causes higher costs, stress on the system, and harm to the environment.
To solve it, the city hired Dougness Holdings Ltd. for a three-year contract worth about $653,000. The company will check over 4,400 manholes and test 280 km of sewer pipes in North Surrey. Work begins this month and will run until 2028.
Why it matters: A stronger sewer system means Surrey can handle growth, protect the environment, and avoid costly breakdowns.
Key Details:
Contract worth $652,881 awarded for three years of inspections.
4,451 manholes and 281,760 metres of sewer mains will be checked.
Rainwater leaks make sewer flows triple in wet months, hurting the system.

Cloverdale’s Heritage Railway Breaks Records

Cloverdale’s heritage railway just had its busiest year ever, drawing over 7,500 visitors and selling out nearly every weekend. Operated by the Fraser Valley Heritage Rail Society (FVHRS), the railway continues to grow as a must-see Surrey attraction.
Why it matters: The line isn’t just a ride—it’s a living piece of Surrey’s history, connecting residents and visitors to B.C.’s rail past while boosting local tourism and family-friendly events. With the 25th anniversary coming in 2026, big celebrations and service expansions are already on the horizon.
Key Details:
2025 was the most successful season on record with about 7,500 visitors.
FVHRS plans to add a second interurban in 2026 to expand capacity.
The railway will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2026 with new events and a Sullivan Station spur.
The railway draws visitors from across Canada and even internationally. Its growth not only supports tourism and local businesses but also strengthens community identity around Surrey’s past and future. As FVHRS gears up for its silver jubilee, Surrey residents can expect more opportunities to connect with this historic treasure.
