Surrey Sports Hall of Fame Exhibit Opens at Museum

A new exhibition at the Museum of Surrey showcases the history of amateur sport in the city. The display cases offer a soft launch for the forthcoming Surrey Sports Hall of Fame. The Hall will name its inaugural class this June. Seen at left is a Cloverdale baseball uniform from 1933. The uniform, a gift to the Surrey Heritage Collection from Helen Matson, was worn by Edgar Siddal in the ’30s. The team was sponsored by Cloverdale General Stores. A mini version of the new Surrey Sports Hall of Fame is now on display at the Museum of Surrey. The small exhibit is a preview of the full Hall of Fame launch happening later this year.

The display includes old photos, sports badges, and memorabilia from baseball, lacrosse, basketball, golf, and more. It highlights how organized sports began in Surrey and how they helped bring the community together.

The official Hall of Fame ceremony will take place at Surrey City Hall on June 2. The Hall will honour athletes, builders, and community leaders who shaped local sports.

• Mini exhibit now open at Museum of Surrey
• Full Hall of Fame launch set for June 2
• Nominations open for the Class of 2027

Surrey Police to Take Over Cloverdale April 1

The Surrey Police Service will officially begin policing Cloverdale on April 1. Until then, the area will continue to be served by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police provincial unit.

Police Chief Norman Lipinski said the transition is part of a phased plan that has already moved policing to other parts of Surrey. Cloverdale will now become “District 4” under the Surrey Police Service.

The transition comes during what police call an “extortion crisis,” which has required dozens of officers to focus on special investigations. Despite earlier plans to delay the move, the Province has directed SPS to take over Cloverdale starting April 1.

This marks another major step in Surrey’s police transition. Residents in Cloverdale will soon be served by Surrey Police instead of the RCMP.

🔑 Key Details:
• Surrey Police take over Cloverdale April 1
• RCMP serving area until transition date
• Move happens amid ongoing extortion investigations

City Warns: Don’t Cut Trees on Public Property

DC Tree Service arborist Riley Eastman (foreground) prunes a tree on 152 Street in February 2025 accompanied by apprentice Dylan Glowa and lane tech Tara Taylor.

The City of Surrey is reminding residents not to prune or cut trees on city property. Under Surrey’s Tree Protection Bylaw, fines can reach up to $20,000.

City officials say trimming trees at the wrong time or in the wrong way can cause serious damage. Healthy trees help provide shade, clean air, and manage rainwater — all important for the community.

Surrey has more than 115,000 public trees, and certified arborists inspect and prune about 20,500 of them each year to keep them healthy.

If a city tree needs attention, residents should report it instead of trimming it themselves.

🔑 Key Details:
• Fines up to $20,000 for cutting city trees
• 115,000+ trees on Surrey public property
• Report concerns at 604-501-5050 or online

43,000 Visitors Enjoy Surrey’s Pop-Up Skating Rink

Surrey’s temporary outdoor skating rink at Civic Plaza was a big success this winter. Over 43,000 people visited the free rink during its 12-week run outside Surrey City Hall.

The covered rink opened during the Surrey Tree Lighting Festival in November and wrapped up on Family Day. Visitors enjoyed real ice skating, fire pits, a café, music, and festive lights — all steps away from Surrey Central SkyTrain Station.

City officials say the rink will return next winter, with improvements based on public feedback. The project was launched as a pilot to bring more activity and community connection to Civic Plaza.

The rink created a new gathering space in City Centre and gave families, students, and seniors a fun winter activity close to home.

TransLink Wants Your Input on Future Transit Plans

TransLink is asking residents in Surrey, North Delta, and White Rock to share their thoughts on future transit and active transportation plans. The feedback will help shape the new South of Fraser East Area Transport Plan, which will guide improvements over the next 15 years.

The plan will look at bus routes, service reliability, safety upgrades, and better connections for walking and cycling. It will also consider how the Surrey Langley SkyTrain links with the rest of the regional transit network.

TransLink says the area south of the Fraser River is growing quickly, and transit needs to keep up with how people travel today. Residents can complete an online survey or use an interactive map to point out problem areas.

🔑 Key Details:
• Public survey open until March 1
• Plan will guide transit upgrades for 15 years
• Includes bus, SkyTrain, cycling, and walking improvements
